More than 1,200 trained volunteer mediators, arbitrators and facilitators representing every ethnic and geographic element of Los Angeles County are available to help resolve disputes.  Volunteer mediators are trained with a focus on cultural diversity and violence prevention.  They are required to complete 40 hours of classroom training and 120 hours of supervised case handling prior to the issuance of a Certificate of Completion under the California Dispute Resolution Programs Act of 1986. New volunteer mediators are recruited and trained approximately four times a year.  DRP mediators are not attorneys.  They do not give legal advice.
The DRP mediates all types of civil disputes including the following:
• Landlord-Tenant
• Neighbor - Neighbor
• Business - Business
• Consumer - Merchant
• Student - Student
• Contracts
• Personal Injury
• Accidents
• Group - Group
• Community related
• Member - Group
• Employer - Employee
• Employee - Employee
• Domestic Relations
• Real Property

Often times, conciliation of the dispute can take place over the telephone.  However, sometimes face-to-face mediation at a neutral location is necessary.
